Samba’s historical significance is underscored by the 22 Mandies established by Raja Suchet Singh, along with the iconic Samba fort. Maharaja Gulab Singh’s annexation in 1846 A.D. integrated Samba into the Jammu and Kashmir state. Formally designated a district in 2006, Samba initially comprised one Tehsil and 382 villages, later consolidated into 381 villages as per SRO No. 444 of 2014. Organized into six Tehsils, 55 Patwar Halquas, and 101 Panchayats, the district also encompasses urban centers like Samba, Vijaypur, Ramgarh, and Bari Brahmana.
Famous as the land of Rajput warriors, the district has produced many gallant soldiers including Independent India’s first gallantry award recipient, Brigadier Rajinder Singh, MVC. Samba is also famous for traditional calico printing, where local dyes and wooden blocks are used for block printing of woven cotton fabrics (sheets). This is the reason why it is also called the ‘city of sheets’.
